Clint Harp at the Des Moines Home + Outdoor Living Show!

clint-kelly-harpCraftsman, company co-owner, TV personality, master of woodworking—is there anything this guy can’t do? Come hear from Clint Harp, from HGTV’s Fixer Upper, at the 2018 Des Moines Home + Outdoor Living Show at the Iowa Events Center this weekend!

Clint builds one-of-a-kind pieces out of reclaimed wood and is known for his carpentry throughout the design and home improvement industry. He founded his company, Harp Design Co., with his wife, Kelly, out of their garage and are now stationed in Waco, Texas with their three children. The company is designed with a dual focus of creating and giving, ensuring that all their products are environmentally sustainable and made with 100% recycled and reclaimed wood. His carpentry skills are also heavily utilized on Chip and Joanna Gaines’ HGTV hit, Fixer Upper.

Up next, Clint will star on the DIY Network series, Wood Work, along with his wife, Kelly, and the team at Harp Design Co. A devoted dad and an avid runner, Clint is passionate about craftsmanship and making beautiful furniture.

We asked Clint some questions about himself, his décor tips and tricks and DIY projects that he loves. Here’s what he had to say:

What’s an easy DIY project that homeowners can tackle to improve their space?
A shelf! Find a cool piece of wood in your garage or in someone else’s scrap pile and make a shelf! With some simple brackets from a home improvement store you can make a really fun shelf with very little effort.

What’s a common mistake that homeowners make when they take on a home improvement project themselves?
Usually it’s underestimating how much time and money it’s going to cost—I’ve done it many times. Best bet is to add 30% on top of whatever you’re guessing!

What’s one thing we wouldn’t guess about you?
I’m OCD about washing my hands.

Fill in the blank: The three things I can’t live without are:
My family, my running shoes, and music.

Where do you go online to find inspiration?
I actually have a weird thing about not looking online for inspiration, I look there for entertainment. My inspiration comes from memories and experiences where I can put my hands on something and see it in real life. A lot gets born from those moments for me.

What décor items are worth splurging on?
I’m biased but I would say all furniture. Ask around and the things that get handed down from generation to generation are tables and beds and dressers and benches and chairs. Spend money on things that last, and you will bless generations of people long after you’re gone.

What are your best outdoor décor tips?
If you don’t love doing it or have an eye for decoration, find someone who does and rely on them. Curb appeal is so important, and the beauty and functionality of your backyard can add so much to your life. So, I say spend time, effort, and money to really make it right—you’ll be glad you did.

What’s your best organization hack?
Throw crap away! We hold on to so much stuff that we just really don’t need, and we find ourselves organizing stuff we don’t need. Before you organize anything, go through everything and only hold on to the stuff that you truly, truly need and use.
